Step 1 to Buying a Home: Find a Realtor

Most people start their home buying search by browsing websites like Realtor.com or Zillow. While that’s completely understandable, step 1 to buying a home should be to hire a Realtor to represent you.

Searching online at Realtor.com, Zillow and similar sites can take up a lot of your time. A Realtor can set you up with automatic MLS (Multiple Listing Service) searches. This means that each day (or as often as you prefer), you’ll receive emails with lists of new properties that match your criteria, or price reductions that might bring a property into your budget. This is a massive time saver. And if you’re in a fast-paced market, like New York City, where desirable properties often sell within days, having a Realtor’s access to MLS and their ability to get you into properties quickly can make all the difference.

So, how do you find and choose the right Realtor? Ideally, you’ll contact our team at 718-374-3700 or realestateclassicllc@gmail.com so we can meet in person and see if we’re a good fit for each other. Remember, not all Realtors are the right match for all clients. You need someone who is not only excellent at their job but someone you feel comfortable working with, as you’ll be spending a lot of time together. Set up a meeting, have coffee, and see if you click. If you do, make sure they have the experience, customer service, and understanding of the New York City market that you’re looking for.

Start by noticing how quickly the Realtor responds to your initial call or email. If they don’t get back to you within 24 hours, that’s a red flag. The New York City market moves quickly, and deals can be lost if your Realtor doesn’t respond promptly during negotiations.

Second, interview the Realtor by asking them specific questions about their experience and local expertise.

Third, expect to sign a buyer representation agreement. Legally, before disclosing any confidential information, you should have a signed buyer representation agreement. This ensures that your Realtor will maintain the confidentiality of your private information.
