Utility Transfers & Cancellations
One of those often-overlooked tasks that’s essential to handle ahead of time is notifying utility companies about your move. You don’t want to be stuck paying for the buyer’s electricity or gas bills for the first month after closing, so make sure to get this done early!
What to Do:
Call the utility companies as soon as possible to inform them of your move and request that services be taken out of your name on the day of closing. In NYC, you’ll want to contact:
- Electricity
- Gas
- Water
- TV and Internet
Condo/Co-op Considerations:
If you’re selling a co-op or condo, the building may have its own systems for billing utilities like water or heating. Be sure to check with the building management or HOA for specific instructions.
Security System:
If you have a security system, schedule it to be shut off the day before closing to ensure everything is properly disconnected before the buyer takes over.
Moving to a New Home?
If you’re moving into a new home, it’s often easier to transfer your utilities to your new address rather than canceling them outright. This ensures a smooth transition without any gaps in service.
